‎The Delta State Government has inaugurated a new cohort of Justices of the Peace (JPs) across the state’s senatorial districts, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening grassroots justice delivery and the rule of law.

‎The inauguration ceremony was held on Friday, February 13, 2026, and was led by the Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon. Justice Theresa Diai, who was represented by Hon. Justice Godwin Briki-Okolosi. She emphasised the critical role of Justices of the Peace in promoting community harmony, maintaining public order, and enhancing access to justice.

‎A total of 426 individuals were appointed, drawn from various parts of the state, reflecting Delta’s diversity and the government’s inclusive approach to justice administration.

‎Administering the oath of office, the Chief Judge noted that the calibre of the appointees underscored the high value the state government places on the office of Justice of the Peace. She described the office as a longstanding institution that has evolved over centuries and remains integral to Nigeria’s legal tradition and justice system.

‎She cited Section 12(1) of the Magistrates’ Courts Law, Cap. M1, Laws of Delta State, 2016, which empowers the Governor to appoint persons of proven integrity as Justices of the Peace, while also granting the Chief Judge authority to confirm and regulate their powers in accordance with the law.

‎Justice Diai further outlined the statutory powers of Justices of the Peace under Section 13 of the law, including preserving public peace, suppressing riots and disorderly conduct, directing the enforcement of criminal laws, issuing summonses and warrants, admitting accused persons to bail, issuing search warrants, and administering affidavits and statutory declarations.

‎Charging the newly inaugurated JPs, she urged them to uphold the highest standards of integrity, impartiality, and diligence, stressing that their appointment was a call to public service and trust.

‎“Your conduct must reflect the dignity and honour of this high office. You are entrusted with the sacred responsibility of upholding justice and maintaining peace within your jurisdictions,” she stated.

‎Responding on behalf of the appointees, Chief Dr. Richmond Hope MacGrey expressed gratitude to the Delta State Government, the Judiciary, and the Ministry of Justice for the confidence reposed in them. He pledged that the Justices of the Peace would discharge their duties diligently, impartially, and strictly in accordance with the law.

‎Among those inaugurated were Hon. Perkins Umukoro, Chief Whip of the Delta State House of Assembly; Hon. Odigie Daniel, Commissioner for Science and Technology; Hon. Goddy Obi Nzete, Executive Chairman of Ndokwa West Local Government Area; Mrs. Theresa Adiabua Oliko, former Functioning Permanent Secretary and Director of Public Communication (rtd); Mr. Giovanni Emephia,news editor ministry of information and other senior government officials, diplomats, professionals, community leaders, and notable Deltans.
