OBOREVWORI REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO JUSTICE REFORMS, JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the justice system in Delta State through infrastructure development, wide-ranging reforms, improved welfare for judicial officers, and the promotion of transparency and judicial independence—all geared toward efficient justice delivery and equal access to the rule of law.
The governor gave the assurance on Monday during the thanksgiving service marking the opening of the 2025/2026 Legal Year of the Delta State Judiciary, held at Emmanuel the Saviour Catholic Church, Asaba.
Addressing judicial officers, legal practitioners, and invited guests, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that a strong, independent, and courageous judiciary remains essential for the rule of law and the sustainability of democratic governance.
Speaking on infrastructure, the governor highlighted key achievements in the sector, describing them as evidence of his administration’s resolve to provide a conducive environment for judicial work. He disclosed that plans have been finalized to renovate and upgrade smaller courts across the state.
“One of my proudest achievements is the completion and commissioning of the six-storey High Court complex. This state-of-the-art facility, commissioned in June 2024, stands as one of the most modern judicial complexes in the country. It features multiple courtrooms, a digital library, lounges, conference rooms, and is supported by e-filing, e-payment systems, and an independent power plant,” he said.
He further noted that virtual court hearing facilities have been installed in courts and correctional centres across the state, powered by solar systems to ensure uninterrupted sessions.
The governor added that arrangements have been made to deploy the long-overdue automatic recording system in courts to enhance the speed and accuracy of proceedings and reduce reliance on handwritten notes.
“In the same vein, the Laws of Delta State have been fully digitized and are now freely accessible to everyone anywhere in the world through the official state government website, the Ministry of Justice website, and LawPavilion,” he stated.
Governor Oborevwori also highlighted new accountability measures under his administration, noting that the previous practice of arbitrary upward review of contract sums after agreements had been signed has now been abolished.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, commended the governor’s support, describing it as instrumental to the significant strides recorded by the ministry in advancing justice delivery in the state.
